France: Climate and Location

Saleve Adventist University (Campus Adventiste du Saleve) is about five miles from Geneva across the Swiss-French border.  The campus itself is part way up Le Saleve, the top of which is about 4,000 feet high.  This mountain, with its restaurants and breath-taking view of the Rhone valley or Mount Blanc, attracts many from nearby Geneva.  From the campus, the city of Geneva and the Leman lake make a picturesque view.

Collonges, the village where the campus is located, is in the foothills of the Alps and has many skiing opportunities within easy access. The campus is affiliated to 'Le Club alpin fracais' which is the national French federation of 'club alpins et de montagne.' Students can have the benefits of the activities proposed by the 'CAF' (all kids of mountain sports) during the school year. Those who would 'rather be sailing' will have occasional opportunities to do so on their own in Lake Geneva.

These are the average high and low temperatures in Geneva for each of the months, September through May:

  • September 21/12°C 70/54°F
  • October -- 14/7°C 57/45°F
  • November -- 8/3°C 46/37°F
  • December -- 14/0°C 39/32°F
  • January -- 4/-2°C 39/28°F
  • February -- 6/-1°C 43/30°F
  • March -- 10/2°C 50/36°F
  • April -- 15/5°C 59/41°F
  • May -- 19/9°C 66/48°F

Since the campus is at a slightly higher elevation than Geneva, temperatures will be slightly lower, especially at night. By North American standards it is 'cold' at Collonges most of the school year. Student wardrobes should be designed accordingly. Casual warm clothes are much more practical than 'dress-up' clothes even though those will also be needed for church, concerts, etc. Waterproof hiking boots, rain shoes, wool socks, umbrella, a heavy waterproof jacket and wool scarves are needed.
